Blue Books -- Print Errors
The resolution released June 17 and the team of sourcebook authors had three Blue Books in the mail by August 27. Countless number of hours were spent researching, editing, proofing these 850 total pages. Hundreds of briefs and thousands of pieces of evidence made 2009 the best publishing year in Monument Publishing's history.
But, sometimes a mistake rears its snickering head. The books have been printed and mailed out, so there really is nothing we can do about it other than post the errors on this site for the world to see. When we find an error, we post it on this page.
Blue Book: Cases & Evidence
BB p. 22 “Drills are ready to roll” card supporting ANWR.
This AFF case's quote was taken out of context. I (Vance, not the author of this case) went and looked it up and I agree – it should not have been used. The card supports “Arctic” drilling but not ANWR – it’s actually referring to a different area in the Arctic.
BB p. 144 Second Card on page “GM crops don’t…”
The number “159” was a footnote that apparently expanded during the editing process to full normal font size and became part of the text. There were not “159 Studies” but merely “Studies”.
BB p. 144 Third Card on page “Golden Rice…”
The number 166 is a footnote not part of the text. It has no impact on the meaning of the quote, just an irritation.
BB p. 278 "HARM/SIGNIFICANCE"
The brief against ITQs starts on page 273 with significance, and should end on page 278 with disads. Instead of ending, the brief starts over with significance again in the middle of page 278 except this time it is significance for the fifth amendment compensation case. It is best to cross out everything from "HARM/SIGNIFICANT" through the end of this brief.
BB p. 299 "GMOs increase yields..."
The brief against KSA starts on page 299 and should end on 304, but instead it starts up in the middle of the brief against GMOs. Cross out everything from the second card on p. 304 to the end of the brief.
BB p. 329 Third Card “Hendryx & Ahern…”
This is the end of the Oil Refinery NEG brief and at this point it begins a reprint of the entire Mountaintop Coal Mining Ban NEG brief. The rest of 329 through p. 338 are useless, since they are repetition of coal evidence from earlier.
BB p. 331 INHERENCY...
The brief against more refineries starts on page 325 and should end on page 330 but continues with part of the brief against mountain top mining.
Blue Book Advanced
BBA p. 26, last card (Jones 08) The phrase “the river, kill little creatures along its banks and uproot tribal” should appear in the middle of the card and not at the end (see below). It should be underlined.
“This worldview puts the environment, not people, at its centre, and its consequences are disastrous. Eco-activists managed to slash $4bn worth of EU aid to Third World industries in 2007 alone. They have sabotaged World Bank funding for infrastructure projects, like a hydro-electric dam in Gujarat province, India, which would have provided power for 5,000 villages, industries and sewage-treatment works, irrigation for crops and clean water for 35m people – all because, as one activist said, it would “change the path of the river, kill little creatures along its banks and uproot tribal people”. Western development agencies have banned the use of DDT when 300m people suffer from malaria and up to 3m die from it each year. The UN promotes the burning of charcoal instead of kerosene when 5m young people die annually from diseases caused by indoor wood-smoke inhalation. Organic farming is promoted at the expense of mechanised agriculture when 840m people suffer from malnutrition. Guilt-ridden Westerners offset their carbon via charities that re-impose back-breaking drudgery on Third World peasants, while their governments, via the 2008 Bali Accord, pay poor countries to plant trees instead of developing their economies.”
BBA p. 293 Title "PRO: GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANIZATIONS" should read "PRO: GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS."
Blue Book Lite
All print copies received the final REEP brief, but the brief does not appear in the Table of Contents. It may help to write that in to reference the REEP brief (the last two pages of the book) during a debate round.
BBL p. 42 Third Card "Obama administration standards..."
This card appears to have no source data, but it actually comes from the same source immediately before it. Be sure to cite the source "Steve Milloy" of CNS News.
BBL p. 83 "ETS" definition card.
The source for the definition of environmental tobacco smoke is incorrect. It should appear as the following:
Nina S. Jones, 2002, Gale Encyclopedia of Public Health, http://www.healthline.com/galecontent/environmental-tobacco-smoke?utm_medium=ask&utm_source=smart&utm_campaign=article&utm_term=Tobacco+smoke&ask_return=Environmental+Tobacco+Smoke
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), which is also referred to as secondhand smoke, is a mixture of the smoke emanating from the burning end of a cigarette, pipe, or cigar, and the smoke exhaled from the lungs of smokers.
